Compact bone tissue
Dense; protective exterior tissue
Spongy bone tissue
cancellous; deep and pourous tissue
Diaphysis
Body of bone or shaft
Medullary Cavity
central cavity within diaphysis
Endosteum
thin layer of connective tissue lining medullary cavity
Yellow Bone Marrow
lipid storage in medullary cavity
Ephiphysis
each end of diaphysis, consists of spongy bone surrounded by a layer of compact bone
Red bone marrow
found in chambers of spongy bone and produced red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
Erythropoesis
production of red blood cells
Articular cartilage
thin layer of hyaline cartilage that caps each end of the epiphysis and facilitates joint movement
Nutrient foramina
small openings in bone that allow for passage of nutrient vessels for nourishment of living tissue
Epiphesal plate
cartilage between diaphysis and epiphysis which is the region of mitotic activity and responsible for linear growth
Epiphyseal line
replaces the plate as ossification occurs
Periosteum
dense regular connective tissue covering the surface of bone that is highly vascular, the place of muscle and tendon attachment, and responsible for appositional growth (increase in width)
Perforating fibers
bundles of collagenous fibers securing the periosteum to the bone
