Disk operating system (DOS)

operating system that the computer uses to enable the data sorage devicces to read/write files, organizes files in a specific way on the disk

MS-DOS

Created by Microsoft, used a command line as the interface for people to create programs/manipulate data files commands are shown in bold text, computer has basic working knowledge of accessing disk drive and loading os sytem files from the disk as part of the boot process

Early versions of Windows

Consisted of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that ran over MS-DOS, started with Windows 1.0 in 1985

New technologies (NT)

in newer versions of Windows, operating system is in direct control of the computer and its hardware, now things that used to be accomplished through the MS0DOS can be accomplished in the GUI

dir

shows a listing of all the files in the current directory

cd

changes the directory to the indicated directory

cd ..

changes the directory tot he directory above the current directory

cd \

Changes the directory to the root directory (often C:)

copy

Copies files to another location

del

Deletes one or more files

find

searches for text in files

mkdir

Creates a new directory

ren

Renames a file

help

displays all the commands that can be used, with a brief description

help command

displays extensive help for the indicated command
