Filtration
separates an insoluble solid from a liquid.
Decantation
separates a liquid from a settled solid by carefully pouring off the liquid, leaving the heavier liquid to sink to the bottom as the lighter one stays on top.
Distillation
a scientific method used to seperate/purify liquids in a mixture by heating them into a gas and then cooling the gas back into a liquid.
chromatography
technique used to separate a mixture into its individual parts (pen inks).
magnetic seperation
a physical method using magnetic fields to pull magnetic material out of a mixture, leaving non-magnetic material behind (separating the two).
centrifugation
a scientific technique that uses rapid spinning to seperate different parts of a liquid mixture based on density and weight. (separating blood cells from clear liquid plasma).
compound
two/more elements chemically bonded
mixture
two or more pure substances mixed together
suspension
a type of mixture where visible, undissolved solid particles are spread throughout a liquid/gas (muddy water-dirt particles drift in the liquid)
colloid
mixture where tiny, insoluble of a substance are suspended evenly throughout another substance (fog)
what is the formula for density?
mass over volume.
solution
a substance (solute) completely dissolved in another (solvent)
correct units for measuring density
g/ml, kg/m3 & g/cm3.
