Integumentary System
An organ system that protects against the environment, regulates body temperature, and provides sensory information. Major components include skin, hair, sweat glands, and nails.
Skeletal System
An organ system that provides support and protection for tissues, stores calcium and minerals, and forms blood cells. Major components include bones, cartilages, associated ligaments, and bone marrow.
Muscular System
An organ system that provides movement, protection, and support for other tissues, and generates heat to maintain temperature. Major components include skeletal muscles and associated tendons.
Nervous System
An organ system that directs immediate responses to stimuli, coordinates or moderates activities of other organ systems, and provides and interprets sensory information about external conditions. Major components include the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and sense organs.
Endocrine System
An organ system that directs long-term changes in the activities of other organ systems, adjusts metabolic activity and energy use by the body, and controls structural and functional changes during development. Major components include the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, pancreas, adrenal gland, gonads, and endocrine tissues in other systems.
Cardiovascular System
An organ system that distributes blood cells, water, and dissolved materials (nutrients, waste products, oxygen, and carbon dioxide), distributes heat, and helps control body temperature. Major components include the heart, blood, and blood vessels.
