Latin - Y10: Baucis and Philemon Lines 49-76

"modo vestra relinquite tecta

"Just leave behind your homes

ac nostros comitate gradus

and accompany us in our steps

et in ardua montis ite simul."

and go with us into the steep parts of the mountain."

Both obey, and supported by walking sticks,

nituntur longo vestigia ponere clivo.

they strive to place their steps on the steep slope.

tantum aberant summo, quantum semel ire sagitta missa potest:

They were only as far as an arrow once shot can go:

flexere oculos et mersa palude cetera prospiciunt,

They turn their eyes and see the rest of the houses submerged in the swamp,

tantum sua tecta manere.

only their house remained.

dumque ea mirantur,

And while they were marvelling at these things,

dum deflent fata suorum,

while they were weeping for the fate of their neighbourhood,

illa vetus dominis etiam casa parva duobus

vertitur in templum;

that old house, small even for its two masters, was turned into a temple;

furcas subiere columnae,

columns replaced the forked posts,

stramina flavescunt

the straw became yellow

aurataque tecta videntur

and the roof appeared to become golden

caelataeque fores

and the doors [appeared] to be engraved

adopertaque marmore tellus.

and the earth [appeared] to be covered in marble.

talia tum placido Saturnius edidit ore:

Then the son of Saturn uttered such things with a calm face:

"dicite, iustex senex et femina coniuge iusto digna, quid optetis."

"Honest old man and woman worthy of an honest husband, tell us what you desire."

cum Baucide pauca locutus

Having spoken a little with Baucis,

iudicium superis aperit commune Philemon:

Philemon revealed their shared decision to the gods:

"esse sacerdotes delubraque vestra tueri poscimus,

"We ask to be priests and to guard your shrine,

et quoniam concordes egimus annos,

and since we have spent our years in harmony,

auferat hora duos eadem,

may the same hour take us two away,

ne coniugis umquam busta meae videam

nor may I ever see the grave of my wife,

neu sim tumulandus ab illa."

nor must I be buried by her."

vota fides sequitur

Fulfilment followed the prayers.

templi tutela fuere,

They were guardians of the temple,

donec vita data est.

as long as life was given to them.

annis aevoque soluti
