How do neurotransmitters function?
They are chemical messengers secreted by neurons that affect active neurons, muscles, or glandular cells.
What distinguishes endocrine chemical messengers?
They are secreted into the bloodstream.
What are the two types of hormones based on solubility?
Water-soluble (non-steroids) and lipid-soluble (steroids).
How do water-soluble hormones function?
They bind to receptors on the cell membrane and require a second messenger to activate a response.

What is the role of lipid-soluble hormones?
They diffuse easily through the cell membrane and bind to receptors inside the cell, turning genes on or off.

What is humoral stimulus in hormone release?
Release of hormones in response to changes in blood levels of ions or nutrients.

What hormones are released by the anterior pituitary gland?
GH, ACTH, TSH, FSH, LH, and prolactin.

What hormones are released by the posterior pituitary gland?
ADH (antidiuretic hormone) and oxytocin.
