Ecosystem
Communities of living organisms all interacting with their environment
Community (Ecology)
Groups of organisms in an area that are all interacting
Biodiversity
The variety of all living things in an ecosystem
Habitat
“Where” an organism lives, it’s address eg, a Wetland
Niche
“How” an organism lives including the feeding role
Food Web
Interacting organisms and their feeding relationships
Food Chain
One part of a food web starting with a producer (plant)
Feeding Role
Which “er” or “ore” you are, see below. Humans are Omnivores.
Decomposer
Organisms that break down dead organisms, like fungi.
Omnivore
Organisms that eat plant material and animals
Herbivore
Organisms that eat plant material only
Carnivore
Organisms that eat other animals only
Producer
Organisms that make their own food. (Plants)
Consumer
Organisms that get energy from eating other organisms.
MRS GREN
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition
Cells
Building block of all living things
Organism
A living thing
Plant Cell
Usually a regular shape with a cell wall, large vacuole and chloroplasts. Eg root hair cell
Animal Cell
Usually an irregular shape held by cell membrane to surround the liquid cytoplasm, can be specialised like nerve cells in mammals
Cell Wall* (*plant only)
Support for plant cells to keep them safe and inside
Cell Membrane
Helps control what moves in and out of a cell for both plants and animals
Cytoplasm
The liquid inside a cell where chemical reactions take place
Chloroplast
Helps carry out photosynthesis (contains green chlorophyll)
Large Vacuole
Pushes organelles like chloroplasts to outer edge of cell so closer to light
Mitochondria
Carries out cell respiration and makes energy
Nucleus
Control centre of cells
