Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)

Stimulates adrenal cortex to secrete glucocorticoids

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

secreted by the anterior pituitary gland to stimulate maturation of the egg cell

Growth Hormone (GH)

Secreted by the anterior pituitary to stimulate growth and cell reproduction.

Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

secreted by the anterior pituitary gland to promote ovulation

Prolactin (PRL)

Secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland; promotes milk secretion

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

Secreted by the anterior pituitary to stimulate the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones

Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH)

secreted by the posterior pituitary; promotes retention of water by the kidneys

Oxytocin (OT)

Secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland; stimulates contraction of the uterus during labor and childbirth

Thyroxine (T4)

Secreted by the thyroid gland; increases metabolism in cells.

Triiodothyronine (T3)

Secreted by the thyroid gland, it increases metabolism in cells.

Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)

Secreted by the parathyroid, it increases blood calcium levels

Epinephrine

Secreted by the adrenal medulla in response to stress.

Norepinephrine (NE)

secreted by the adrenal medulla; increases alertness, raises bp

Aldosterone

Secreted by the adrenal cortex; stimulates the kidney to retain sodium ions and water

Cortisol

stress hormone released by the adrenal cortex

Glucagon

A hormone secreted by the pancreatic alpha cells that increases blood glucose concentration

Insulin

A protein hormone synthesized in the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels

Testosterone

Both males and females have it, but the additional testosterone in males stimulates the growth of the male sex organs in the fetus and the development of the male sex characteristics during puberty

Estrogen

A sex hormone secreted in greater amounts by females than by males. In nonhuman female mammals, estrogen levels peak during ovulation, promoting sexual receptivity.

Progesterone

A hormone produced by the ovaries that acts with estrogen to bring about the menstrual cycle.
