Cognitive domain
A domain of learning that involves listening to or reading facts and descriptions.
Affective domain
A domain of learning that appeals to a person’s feelings, beliefs, or values.
Psychomotor domain
A domain of learning that involves learning by doing.
Pedagogy
The science of teaching children or those with cognitive ability comparable to children.
Andragogy
The principles of teaching adult learners.
Geragogy
Unique techniques that enhance learning among older adults (geriatrics).
Illiterate
A client who is unable to read or write.
Functionally illiterate
A client with minimal literacy skills who may disguise or compensate for learning deficits.
Teach-back method
An active teaching method based on the cognitive domain where the client explains what was taught or demonstrated in their own words to evaluate understanding.
Informal teaching
Unplanned teaching that occurs spontaneously at the bedside.
Formal teaching
A type of teaching that requires a predetermined plan.
Learning readiness
The client’s physical and psychological well-being as it relates to their ability to attend to instruction.
Motivation
A purpose for acquiring new information, such as the desire to restore independence or prevent complications.
Visual impairment instruction strategy
Use reading material in large print, identify oneself by speaking rather than tapping, and avoid distractions like the television.
Hearing loss instruction strategy
Face the client, speak slowly, use a regular tone of voice, and avoid distractions.
Impaired cognition instruction strategy
Involve the family, make eye contact, speak slowly, and provide short, frequent educational sessions.
Recall assessment (Gerontologic)
Asking the client to recall what has been discussed after approximately 15 minutes to assess retained information.
