Caliphate
A state led by a caliph who acts as both the political and religious successor to the Prophet Muhammad.
Sultanate
A state ruled by a sultan who holds secular, political, and military power without claiming supreme religious leadership.
Dar al-Islam
A medieval Islamic term referring to the Muslim-ruled regions of the world.
Mongols
Nomadic pastoralists from the steppes of Central Asia who united under Genghis Khan in the 13th century to create the largest contiguous land empire in world history.
Gers (or Yurts)
Portable felt tents used as dwellings by nomadic Mongol herders organized into family-based clans and tribes.
Pax Mongolica
A period of relative peace across Eurasia created by the vast Mongol Empire once conquests slowed.
Silk Road
Trade routes protected and improved by the Mongols, making travel safe for merchants, missionaries, and travelers like Marco Polo between the East and West.
Hulagu Khan
A Mongol ruler, grandson of Genghis Khan, who founded the Ilkhanate of Persia and led the Siege of Baghdad.
Siege of Baghdad (1258 CE)
A devastating military campaign in February 1258 led by Hulagu Khan that effectively ended the Islamic Golden Age.
Khanates
The four major regions into which the Mongol Empire eventually split before Mongol rulers adopted local cultures and religions.
