The material covering Earth's surface that supports plant growth.
Topsoil
The upper layer of soil used for growing plants.
Conservation
Protecting and taking care of natural resources.
Slope
The rise or fall of the land.
Percent Slope
A way of describing how steep land is using a percentage.
Landform
A natural shape or feature of Earth's surface.
Flood Plain
Low-lying land next to a river that can be affected by flooding.
Terrace
Land located between a floodplain and upland.
Upland Flat
An upland area with a very gentle slope.
Upland Hill Slope
An upland area with a steeper slope.
Alluvium
Soil and rock material transported and deposited by water.
Glacial Till
Material left behind by glaciers.
Soil Profile
A vertical view showing the different layers of soil.
Soil Horizon
A distinct layer within a soil profile.
Organic Matter
Material that came from once-living plants or animals.
O-Horizon
The upper soil layer containing lots of organic matter.
A-Horizon
The topsoil layer of the soil profile.
Erosion
The removal or movement of soil by wind or water.
Ground Cover
Plants or other material covering and protecting soil.
Sediment
Soil or other material that has been moved and deposited.
