¿Qué costumbres o tradiciones considera más importantes en su vida?

What customs or traditions are most important in your life?

La tradición oral fue fundamental en mi infancia. Mi abuela contaba historias sobre espíritus y milagros con una seriedad total, como si fueran hechos. Esa forma de contar me enseñó que lo mágico podía convivir con lo real, y fue la base de Cien años de soledad y de mi estilo literario.

Oral tradition was essential in my childhood. My grandmother told stories about spirits and miracles with complete seriousness, as if they were facts. That way of storytelling taught me that magic could exist alongside reality, and it became the foundation of One Hundred Years of Solitude and my literary style.

¿Cómo describiría la cultura de su país?

How would you describe your country’s culture?

Colombia tiene una cultura rica, compleja y muchas veces contradictoria. Sus raíces indígenas, africanas y españolas crean una mezcla intensa de alegría, violencia, fe y memoria. Macondo, el pueblo ficticio en muchas de mis obras, refleja esa realidad colombiana en su forma más profunda y simbólica.

Colombia has a rich, complex, and often contradictory culture. Its Indigenous, African, and Spanish roots create a mix of joy, violence, faith, and memory. Macondo, the fictional town in many of my works, reflects that Colombian reality in its most symbolic and profound form.

¿Qué desafíos culturales enfrentó durante su vida?

What cultural challenges did you face in your life?

Me enfrenté a críticas y censura por escribir sobre política, dictaduras y temas sexuales en una sociedad conservadora. Libros como El otoño del patriarca y La mala hora fueron vistos como provocadores. Además, mis vínculos con la Revolución Cubana me cerraron puertas en varios países.

I faced criticism and censorship for writing about politics, dictatorships, and sexual themes in a conservative society. Books like The Autumn of the Patriarch and In Evil Hour were seen as provocative. Also, my ties to the Cuban Revolution closed doors for me in several countries.

¿Cómo fue su infancia y cómo influyó en su carrera?

What was your childhood like and how did it influence your career?

Mi infancia en Aracataca fue solitaria pero mágica. Crecí rodeado de mujeres, cuentos familiares, supersticiones y el silencio de un pueblo lleno de secretos. Todo eso formó la base emocional y estética de mis novelas. La estructura circular del tiempo en Cien años de soledad nace de esa infancia.

My childhood in Aracataca was lonely but magical. I grew up surrounded by women, family stories, superstitions, and the silence of a town full of secrets. All of that shaped the emotional and aesthetic core of my novels. The circular structure of time in One Hundred Years of Solitude comes from that childhood.

¿Qué eventos históricos marcaron su vida?

What historical events marked your life?

El asesinato de Gaitán en 1948 fue un antes y un después. Vi la violencia política de cerca y eso me llevó al periodismo. Más tarde, la Revolución Cubana y mi relación con Fidel Castro influenciaron tanto mi pensamiento como novelas como El general en su laberinto, donde exploro el poder y el fracaso.

Gaitán’s assassination in 1948 was a turning point. I saw political violence up close and it led me to journalism. Later, the Cuban Revolution and my relationship with Fidel Castro influenced both my thinking and novels like The General in His Labyrinth, where I explore power and failure.

¿Cómo fue su vida durante la guerra o dictaduras?

What was your life like during war or dictatorships?

Viví entre el exilio y la vigilancia. Aunque no fui encarcelado, sabía que mis palabras tenían consecuencias. Por eso usé la literatura como arma. En Noticia de un secuestro, por ejemplo, denuncié el narcoterrorismo que el gobierno muchas veces negaba.

I lived between exile and surveillance. Though I was never imprisoned, I knew my words had consequences. That’s why I used literature as a weapon. In News of a Kidnapping, for example, I denounced narco-terrorism that the government often denied.

¿De qué logro se siente más orgulloso?

What achievement are you most proud of?

Me siento orgulloso de haber contado la historia de América Latina desde dentro. Cien años de soledad no solo es una novela mágica, es también una historia política, social y humana de nuestro continente. El Nobel fue una validación de esa misión.

I’m proud of having told Latin America’s story from the inside. One Hundred Years of Solitude isn’t just a magical novel—it’s also a political, social, and human story of our continent. The Nobel was a validation of that mission.

¿Cómo espera que el mundo recuerde su legado?

How do you hope the world remembers your legacy?

Espero que me recuerden como alguien que hizo visible lo invisible: los dolores, los sueños y las memorias de América Latina. Usé el realismo mágico no solo para embellecer, sino para denunciar, resistir y preservar nuestra identidad.

I hope to be remembered as someone who made the invisible visible: the pains, dreams, and memories of Latin America. I used magical realism not just to beautify, but to denounce, resist, and preserve our identity.

¿Qué consejo daría a las futuras generaciones?

What advice would you give to future generations?

No escriban para complacer, sino para revelar la verdad, aunque incomode. La literatura no debe servir al poder; debe cuestionarlo, imaginar otros futuros y rescatar lo olvidado.

Don’t write to please, write to reveal the truth, even if it’s uncomfortable. Literature should not serve power; it should question it, imagine other futures, and rescue what has been forgotten.

¿Qué importancia tiene el idioma español en su vida?

How important is the Spanish language in your life?

El español es mi casa. Con él pude crear realidades múltiples, jugar con el tiempo, y construir personajes como Aureliano Buendía o el coronel sin nombre. Es un idioma que me dio libertad total para experimentar.

Spanish is my home. With it, I could create multiple realities, play with time, and build characters like Aureliano Buendía or the nameless colonel. It’s a language that gave me total freedom to experiment.

¿Habla una lengua indígena o local además del español?

Do you speak an Indigenous or local language besides Spanish?

No, pero las lenguas indígenas y sus visiones del tiempo y la naturaleza influyeron mucho en mi obra. El mito y lo sagrado que ellas conservan están presentes en Macondo y sus historias.

No, but Indigenous languages and their views of time and nature influenced my work deeply. The myth and sacredness they preserve are present in Macondo and its stories.

Si pudiera viajar al pasado, ¿qué momento cambiaría?

If you could travel back in time, what moment would you change?

Me habría quedado más tiempo en Colombia durante los años de mayor violencia. Aunque escribí desde fuera, a veces sentí que debía estar más cerca de mi gente, contando sus historias desde el centro del dolor.

I would have stayed longer in Colombia during the years of greatest violence. Even though I wrote from afar, I sometimes felt I should have been closer to my people, telling their stories from the heart of the pain.

Si tuviera que resumir su vida en una palabra, ¿cuál sería?

If you had to summarize your life in one word, what would it be?

“Macondo”. Es el símbolo de todo lo que viví y escribí: la mezcla de lo político y lo mítico, de lo personal y lo universal. En Macondo cabe toda mi visión del mundo.

“Macondo.” It’s the symbol of everything I lived and wrote: the mix of the political and the mythical, the personal and the universal. My whole vision of the world fits inside Macondo.
