Modern art originated in France in the 1870s. During this time period, a group of artists, called the impressionists, presented a new style of painting.

before impressionism

the style of art was very traditional. It was very focused on heroes, angels, and the portraits.

This was called classicism and romanticism. Painters worked in studios indoors.

Did people support impressionists?

people did not support impressionism at first. They thought it was too radical of change. they were not allowed to show their works at galleries. Instead, they had to have their own little expositions with their friends. They did this a lot, but it was a fail. Nobody came to them.

What happened eventually to the impressionists?

Eventually, critics finally understood he importance of the impressionist movement. The art collectors eventually started to collect paintings, one by one. Today these paintings are worth millions.

Renoir began painting store fronts and cafes. he liked to paint with warm colors. He loved painting children, young girls, females, flowers, and cafe scenes, and balls.

Edouard Manet (1832-1883)

Manet was a marine officer, but after his trip to Brazil, he wanted to paint. He liked violent colors: red, brown, orange, etc. He was known as the father of impressionism. He painted portraits of his friends, daily life, landscapes, etc.

Berthe Morisot (1841-1895)

This was the step sister of Edouard Manet. She really liked to use light colors to paint. She painted a lot of flowers, landscapes, rural scenes, and portraits of young girls.

Claude Monet (1840-1926)

painted the picture of the red sun. Monet liked painting selections of things, especially on water. He liked painting with light colors and emphasized what light did on a painting. He invented a painting technique by just painting spots. he liked to use yellow, red, Lue, green, and orange, white and black. Monet also liked to paint scenes at different times of day. He liked to paint the same scene in the morning, afternoon, and night, in spring, summer, fall, winter. He was the only one who did this. He liked to paint urban scenes like the Rouen cathedral, the train station, the Thames river, etc. He was extremely poor at first, but over time, he became very rich.

Where did Monet live?

he lived in a countryside house in Giverny. He had a wonderful garden with a lot fo flowers that changed colors in the seasons. He painted his garden many times.

what happened to Monet as he got old?

he turned blind, which ended his painting career. His garden and house was preserved for millions of visitors.

After Impressionism

The impressionist movement opened a way for more artists to try new styles. New Styles were more creative. In the 1900s, Paris was the capital of arts and attracted artists from all different countries.

VanGogh was a dutch painter who painted very famous paintings like starry night. He really liked light and bright colors. He exaggerated the intensity of light and shadows. He also liked to paint inanimate objects. He liked to paint moons and stars and the sky.

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903)

He worked in a bank for a long part of his life. at the age of 35, he quit his job, family, and old life for painting. He painted impressionist style of arts. He painted where he traveled. He went to Panama, Martinique, Tahiti, and Marquises. He painted simple people that were kind and he painted a lot of beautiful paintings.

He was born in a rich family. At age 14, he had a horse accident that rendered him crippled. He decided to be a painting. He frequently painted cafes, cabarets, music halls, and plays and movies. He painted Paris daily life.

did not study in an art school. Instead, he created a supernatural style of painting. It was very radical and simple, but naive. It was very imaginative and represented the surreal animals and people.
