Animal Nutrition
The science of determining how animals use food to transform into body tissues and energy based on environment, activity level, age, genetics, and health.
Nutrient
A single class of food or group of like food that aids in the support of life, making it possible for animals to grow or provide energy for physiological processes.
Ration
The specific amount of food an animal needs per day to satisfy its physiological nutrient requirements.
Essential Nutrients
Nutrients that cannot be synthesized by the body in sufficient quantities and must be provided in the diet.
Nonessential Nutrients
Nutrients that can be synthesized by the body and do not necessarily need to be obtained directly from food.
Digestion
The chemical and mechanical breakdown of food into individual nutrients that the body can absorb for energy, growth, tissue repair, and reproduction.
Crown
The region of the tooth located above the gumline.
Root
The portion of the tooth situated below the gumline.
Enamel
The hard outermost layer of the tooth, considered the hardest substance in the body.
Dentin
The second layer of the tooth structure, located directly beneath the enamel.
Pulp Cavity
The innermost layer of the tooth containing nerves, arteries, and blood vessels.

Dentition
The arrangement, type, and number of teeth present in an animal species.
Incisors
Front teeth used primarily to bite and grasp food.
Canines
The longest and sharpest teeth in the mouth, used to tear food apart.
Premolars
Wider teeth positioned between the canines and molars used to crush or grind food.
Molars
Large back teeth used to grind down food particles for digestion.
Papillae
Hair-like projections on the surface of the tongue that act as tastebuds.
Mucosa
A thin lining of connective tissue lining the gastrointestinal tract that facilitates the smooth passage of food.
Peristalsis
Wave-like muscle contractions and motions that move ingested food through the gastrointestinal tract.

Monogastric Digestive System
A digestive system featuring a simple, single-chambered stomach, found in species such as humans, dogs, cats, and pigs.

Cardia
The entrance region of the stomach that connects to the esophagus and includes the fundus.
Pylorus
The exit passage of the stomach that opens into the small intestines.
Bile
A digestive fluid secreted by the liver to assist in the digestion and absorption of fats and nutrients.
Amylase
A pancreatic enzyme responsible for digesting starches.
Trypsin
A digestive enzyme produced by the pancreas that breaks down proteins.
Lipase
A pancreatic enzyme that breaks down lipids and fats.

Ruminant Digestive System Diagram

A regurgitated mixture of grass, hay, and saliva chewed again by ruminants to further break down plant fiber.
Regurgitation

Eructation
Belching caused by gas buildup in the rumen as ruminants chew with open mouths, allowing air into the fermentation chamber.
Rumen
The largest compartment of the ruminant stomach, comprising 80% of its volume, which functions as a large microbial fermentation vat.
Reticulum
The honeycomb-textured stomach compartment comprising 5% of the ruminant stomach that catches foreign objects and non-digestible items for regurgitation.
Omasum
The stomach compartment comprising 8% of the ruminant stomach that absorbs water and nutrients while grinding roughage and grains.
Abomasum
The fourth compartment comprising 10% of the ruminant stomach, known as the 'true stomach' where acidic and enzymatic digestion occurs.

Hindgut Fermenter Digestive System Diagram

Crop
An expandable storage pouch in the avian esophagus used to temporarily hold and soften food.
Proventriculus
The glandular 'true stomach' of birds where chemical, acidic, and enzymatic digestion begins.
Gizzard
A thick muscular organ in birds containing ingested grit that mechanically grinds down coarse food particles.
Cloaca
The common terminal chamber in birds for the intestinal, urinary, and reproductive tracts.
Vent
The external anatomical opening of the avian cloaca.
Proteins
Large complex molecules constructed from chains of amino acids that are vital for normal tissue growth, structural repair, maintenance, and lactation.
Taurine
An essential amino acid required by cats; deficiency causes blindness, reproductive failure, or dilated cardiomyopathy.
Carbohydrates
The primary source of energy making up approximately 75% of an animal's diet, composed of starches, sugars, and digestible or indigestible fibers.
Kilocalories
A unit of measure defining the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1gram of water by 1∘C.
Linoleic Acid
An essential fatty acid required in the diets of both dogs and cats for normal skin and coat health.
Arachidonic Acid
An essential fatty acid specifically required by cats that must be derived directly from animal fats.
Fat-Soluble Vitamins
Vitamins A, D, E, and K, which are absorbed and transported alongside dietary fats and stored in body tissue.
Water-Soluble Vitamins
Vitamins B and C, which dissolve in water and are not stored extensively within body tissues.
Macro-minerals
Major minerals required in larger quantities, including Calcium (Ca), Phosphorus (P), Magnesium (Mg), Potassium (K), Sodium (Na), and Chlorine (Cl).
Trace Minerals
Micro minerals required in minute concentrations, including Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Manganese (Mn), Iodine (I), Cobalt (Co), Selenium (Se), and Fluorine (F).
Dehydration
The excessive loss of body water, where a loss of 20% total water content can prove fatal.

Dog Body Condition Scale
A 5-point evaluation scale classifying dogs from 1 (Severely Underweight) to 5 (Obese), with 3 representing Ideal Weight.

Cat Body Condition Scale
A 9-point evaluation system for cats grading body mass from Very Thin (1) to Ideal (5) to Obesity (9).
Feline Anorexia
A condition where a cat refuses food; if persistent for 3 to 4 days, it leads to hepatic lipidosis (liver failure) due to severe protein deprivation.
Large Breed Puppy Food
A diet formulation designed for large breed dogs containing reduced caloric density and controlled calcium levels to regulate rapid skeletal growth.
