Imagery
An experience that mimics real experience, we can be aware of seeing an image, feeling movement as an image or experiencing an image of smells, tastes or sounds without actually experiencing the real thing
Effectiveness of imagery
better outcomes when:
you mix physical practice with imagery there is better performance
Where and when to use imagery
training and practice - before, during and after
competition - before or during
pre-competition - used most often
injury and rehab settings
Why use imagery - motivational specific
goals and outcomes (imaging receiving a medal)
Why use imagery - motivational general mastery
mental toughness, confidence, in control
Why use imagery - motivational general arousal
relaxation, psych up, emotion
Why use imagery - cognitive specific
specific skill, rehearsal or correction
Why use imagery - cognitive general
strategies, game plans or routines
What type of imagery do athletes use the most
motivational general mastery
What type of imagery - mode (senses)
visual (what do you see)
kinesthetic (what does the movement feel like)
auditory (what do you hear)
Olfactory (are there smells)
Taste (what do you taste)
What type of imagery - perspective
internal (actor)
external (spectator) - as if you were watching your self; video
athletes use both
What type of imagery - positive or negative
use positive images, see what you want to have happen
For imagery to be affective
vividness (how clear are the 5 senses)
controllability (can you manipulate the images to make them do what you want)
Imagery assessment tools
vividness of moment imagery questionnaire-2
movement imagery questionnaire-3
sport imagery questionnaire
Using imagery - PETTLEP Model
individualized approach
want to develop imagery interventions that match images to actual movement experiences
P - Physical
physical nature of the imagery is dependent upon the task
E - Enviroment
imagine the practice or competitive setting as closely as possible
link to confidence
T - Task
match between imaged task and actual movement
T - Timing
match imaged skill time to actual movement time/speed
Example of timing
if you skating routine takes 3 minutes to execute so should the imagery
L - Learning
imagery content should change over time as skill becomes well learned
E - Emotion
images will be more effective if you attach meaning or emotion to them
P - Perspective
internal or external perspective
