SEAT Space Management System
Searching, evaluating, and executing, repeated continuously until reaching the destination.
Vehicle Operating Space
Divided into seven basic areas: the space the vehicle occupies and six zones surrounding the vehicle, used to determine if each zone is open, closed, or changing.
IPDE Method
A space management system: Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute
Identify (IPDE)
Scanning the driving environment for real and potential hazards.
Predict (IPDE)
Anticipating the actions of other drivers and the potential consequences.
Decide (IPDE)
Determining the appropriate action to take to avoid a crash.
Execute (IPDE)
Carrying out the decided-upon action.
Right Turn Procedure
Be in the lane closest to the curb, signal 100ft ahead, check for pedestrians and traffic, brake smoothly, stop if needed, and turn into the lane closest to the curb.
Left Turn Procedure
Be in the furthest left lane, signal 100ft ahead, keep wheels straight, check for pedestrians and traffic, and turn into the leftmost lane.
Reasons for Changing Lanes
Lane ending, preparing to turn, passing a vehicle, hazard or obstacle, avoiding a bicyclist or pedestrian, entering/exiting an expressway, entering from a curb or shoulder.
Before Changing Lanes
Check mirrors, look over shoulder in blind spots, check quickly, check mirrors again, and check the far lane.
Changing Lanes Procedure
Signal until completely changed, recheck mirrors and blind spots, move smoothly, maintain or slightly accelerate speed, and turn off signal.
