Adam Smith
Scotish Social Philosopher and political economist. Instrumental in the rise of classical liberalism.
An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776) was the first comprehensive system of political economy. The Theory of Moral Sentiments by Adam Smith laid the foundation for the Wealth of Nations,
in which Smith described the principles of “human nature” as universal and unchanging. He viewed humans as beings driven by passions yet self-regulated by their capacity for reason and sympathy, fostering both rational and moral faculties. Smith studied at the University of Glasgow, a center of the Scottish Enlightenment, and led a highly social and intellectually engaged life.
