What is repression?
the unconscious removal of painful, traumatic, or unacceptable thoughts, memories, or desires from awareness
can a person consciously recall repressed material?
no the person cannot consciously remember the event but its still affects their behaviour or emotions
how does repression influence behaviour?
the forgotten material may show up as anxiety, tension, fears, or unexplained emotional reactions
example?
someone who experienced a car accident may forget the details but still feel anxious when riding in cars or approaching similar situations
