Maslow’s Hierachy of Needs
Some needs are more basic than others. Lower needs must be satisfied before higher-level needs can be met. Presented in ascending order from the most basic to the most satisfying.
Reason for needs being met in healthful ways.
There will be motivation to get them met in unhealthful/inappropriate ways.
Physical Needs (if denied)
They would become physically weak.
Lack of essential nutrients interferes with the normal functioning of the brain.
Affects a person mentally.
Emotional Needs
Need to be loved.
Need to belong.
Need to be valued and recognized.
Aesthetic needs
Our response to or appreciation of that which is beautiful.
We feel the need to appreciate beauty in its many forms.
Self-actualization (and how to work towards it)
The striving to become the best that you can be.
Having goals that motivate and inspire you.
Not all needs can be met all the time.
Strive to satisfy the higher ones.
Self-actualization is a life long process.
Personality
Complex set of characteristics making you unique.
Sets you apart from everyone else.
Factors include:
Emotional makeup, attitudes, thoughts, behaviors, etc.
One window on a person’s mental health.
Heredity
First influence on personality. Includes basic intellectual abilities, temperament. and emotional tendencies.
Environment
Includes all of your surroundings and experiences. Can have positive or negative effects.
Modeling.
Copyign the behaviors of those you are exposed to.
Personal Behavior
How you make decisions, what decisions you make, and what actions you take. This can give better quality of life and physical and mental health.
Emotions
Signals telling your mind and body how to react.
The way your body and mind respond to input from outside your body.
Can greatly affect all sides of your health triangle.
Love
Involves strong affection, deep concern, and respect.
Empathy
The ability to imagine and understand how someone feels. Can offer insight and understanding.
Fear
A sageguard or protection if you need to respond to a real threat. Your body responds physically.
Sympathetic nervous system prepares body for necessary action.
Hormones secreted to make heart beat faster and breathing rate increase.
Anger
May be displayed as a simple annoyance. May rise up to a boiling rage. If not handled constructively, great damage to others and others property as well as yourself can be caused.
Hostility
Intentional use of unfriendly or nasty behavior.
Guilt
Response when you feel you’ve done something wrong. Results from acting against one’s values or from not acting at all. Associated with low self-esteem. Can motivate you to make positive changes.
emotional responses comon during teen years.
rapid growth and other changes brought on by hormones. changes are normal. all teens go through them.
