Pathology
The study of disease.
Infection
Presence of pathogen, but not necessarily damage to the host.
Disease
An infection that causes damage to the host.
Pathogen
The organism that causes the infection.
Symptoms
Subjective feelings that can't be measured (e.g., nausea, headache).
Sign
Quantifiable and observable change (e.g., temperature, lesion size).
Non-communicable disease
Can occur in immunocompromised individuals caused by normal flora.
Epidemiology
The study of incidence, distribution, and possible control of diseases.
Sporadic disease
Disease with no pattern (e.g., typhoid fever).
Endemic disease
Disease that is constantly present in a population (e.g., common cold).
Epidemic disease
Disease with a higher than normal incidence in a population (e.g., influenza).
Pandemic disease
A global epidemic (e.g., COVID-19).
