Code of Hammurabi

A legal code from ca. 1780 BC, discovered in 1901 and preserved in the Louvre, Paris, that mandated severe penalties for structural failures, establishing that the protection of public health, safety, and welfare is the primary reason building codes exist.

Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)

The official charged with the interpretation and enforcement of building codes, whose enforcement powers are delegated by statutory authority to various levels of government.

National Electrical Code (NEC)

A standard for the practical safeguarding of persons and property from electrical hazards; it functions as a safety standard rather than a design specification or instruction manual for unqualified individuals.

Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA)

A major model code organization founded in 1915 in Country Club Hills, Illinois.

Uniform Building Code (UBC)

A model building code established by the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), which was founded in 1927 in Whittier, California.

Southern Building Code (SBC)

Also known as the Standard Building Code, a model building code established by the Southern Building Code Congress.

International Code Council (ICC)

An organization formed in 2000 in Falls Church, Virginia, by merging BOCA, ICBO, and SBC to publish unified international building, mechanical, plumbing, and fire codes.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

A federal civil rights law enacted in 1990 (revised in 2010) under the Department of Justice - Civil Rights Division that serves as an enforceable building code with direct force of law.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

An organization that publishes National Fire Codes focused on maintenance and operation, including provisions for fire truck access, extinguisher placement, standpipes, and sprinkler systems.

Fine Print Notes

Explanatory notes within the National Electrical Code that provide informational background and are explicitly classified as non-mandatory code language.

NEC Chapters 1 through 4

The general requirements of the NEC covering General, Wiring and Protection, Wiring Methods and Materials, and Equipment for General Use, which apply broadly to all electrical applications.

NEC Chapter 8

The section of the NEC covering Communications Systems, which operates independently and is not subject to Chapters 1 through 7 unless specifically cross-referenced.

NEC Chapter 9

The section of the NEC containing tables used for calculating raceway sizes, conductor fill, and voltage drop.

NEC Annexes A through I

Informational sections located at the end of the NEC that are provided solely for reference and are not enforceable elements of the code.

Board of Rules and Appeals

A body typically established in building jurisdictions to hear and resolve conflicts regarding building code interpretations and enforcement.
