Epidemiology
The study of disease in populations.
Wellness-Illness Continuum
A continuum on which health exists, ranging from high-level optimal wellness to illness, disability, and reduced function.
Social Ecological Model of Health (SEM)
A health framework that considers interactions across individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and public policy levels.
Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)
Interconnected conditions such as income, education, environment, employment, social support, and healthcare access that affect health status.
Functional Health
A perspective focusing on an individual's self-rated health and their ability to function in daily life.
Gordon's Functional Health Patterns
An assessment framework used to evaluate an individual's health status and daily functioning.
Resilience
The ability to adapt to stress and recover from challenges.
Clinical Model
A health model defining health as the absence of disease or symptoms, where care may be delayed until illness occurs.
Role Performance Model
A health model defining health as the ability to fulfill expected roles, and illness as the inability to perform usual roles.
Adaptive Model
A health model defining health as successful adaptation to change, and illness as the inability to adapt effectively.
Eudaimonistic Model
A health model defining health as optimal well-being and life fulfillment, emphasizing whole-person, holistic care.
Disease
A failure or breakdown of normal body function or adaptation that causes structural or functional changes.
Illness
The personal experience and perception of poor health, affecting physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being.
Healthy People 2030
A national U.S. initiative that establishes measurable health objectives and guides public health priorities for health promotion and disease prevention.
Primary Prevention
Health protection and promotion interventions, such as immunizations and education, implemented before disease or dysfunction occurs.
Secondary Prevention
Interventions focused on early diagnosis, prompt treatment, and limiting disability, primarily performed through screening tests.
Tertiary Prevention
Interventions focused on rehabilitation and maximizing function when a permanent disease or disability is present.
Health Protection
Measures focused on reducing threats to health.
Health Promotion
Interventions encouraging lifestyle changes to move toward improved health.
Health in All Policies
A collaborative policy approach that considers community health and social determinants of health when enacting any policy.
Advocate
A nursing role that directly assists persons to obtain necessary services.
Care Manager
A nursing role that assists individuals to obtain care and coordinates services.
Consultant
A nursing role providing specialized skills and knowledge.
Deliverer of Services
A nursing role that provides direct care to patients.
Educator
A nursing role focused on promoting patient health literacy and knowledge.
Healer
A nursing role that helps individuals integrate and balance their health.
Researcher
A nursing role focused on utilizing and contributing to evidence-based practice.
Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)
The conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best research evidence integrated with clinical expertise to make healthcare decisions.
