Glycoprotein
A cell membrane structure composed of a carbohydrate bound to a protein, located on the outer surface of the membrane.
Glycolipid
A membrane component consisting of a carbohydrate bound to a lipid, located on the extracellular side of the plasma membrane.
Extracellular fluid
The body fluid located outside of cells, surrounding the plasma membrane.
Cytosol
The fluid portion of the cytoplasm located inside the plasma membrane.
Nucleolus
A dense body located inside the nucleus that produces ribosomal subunits.
Chromatin
The uncoiled DNA and protein complex contained within the nuclear envelope of a non-dividing cell.
Microvilli
Microscopic, finger-like projections of the plasma membrane that increase surface area for absorption.
Secretory vesicles
Membrane-bound sacs that transport materials synthesized within the cell to the plasma membrane for secretion.
Lysosomes
Organelles containing digestive enzymes responsible for breaking down cellular waste and macromolecular debris.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
A membrane network continuous with the nuclear envelope, studded with ribosomes for protein synthesis and processing.
Microtubules
Cylindrical protein filaments of the cytoskeleton involved in cellular structure, organelle transport, and chromosome movement.
Pleural cavity
The potential space between the visceral pleura and parietal pleura surrounding each lung.
Pericardial cavity
