Chloroplast
An organelle that contains chlorophyll, a green pigment that traps energy from sunlight and gives plants their green color.
Mitochondrion
An organelle that produces a usable form of energy for the cell through cellular respiration and contains DNA.
Vesicle
A small, membrane-bound sac that transports materials within the cell.
Middle Lamella
The thin layer between primary walls of adjacent plant cells.
Vacuole
A large membrane-bound, water-filled sac in plants, providing temporary storage of food, enzymes, and waste products.
Cell Wall
A firm, protective structure that gives the cell its shape in plants, fungi, and most bacteria, composed mainly of cellulose in plants.
Cell Membrane
A semi-permeable membrane that separates the inside of the cell from the outside environment and contains phosphates, lipids, and proteins.
Nucleus
An organelle that manages cell functions in eukaryotic cells and contains most of the cell's DNA.
Cytosol
The clear fluid inside the cell, part of the cytoplasm.
Ribosome
The site of protein synthesis, found attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum and in the cytoplasm.
Golgi Apparatus
A closely stacked, flattened membrane sac for the processing and packaging of proteins.
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
A folded membrane that forms a network of interconnected compartments in the cytoplasm, including smooth and rough types.
Lysosome
An organelle that digests excess or worn-out cell parts, food particles, and invading viruses or bacteria.
Nucleolus
A structure found within the nucleus that produces ribosomes.
Cytoplasm
The jelly-like substance that fills the cell and contains organelles.
