Passion

Jesus’ suffering leading up to his death

Abraham and Isaac

Abraham is asked to sacrifice Isaac, his beloved son. Isaac carries the wood for the sacrifice and is eventually spared.

How does Isaac prefigure Jesus?

Both are beloved sons connected with sacrifice, carrying wood, and trust or obedience.

Passover

The Israelites were enslaved in Egypt, sacrificed a lamb, marked their homes with its blood, and were freed from slavery.

Paschal Lamb

The lamb sacrificed during Passover. It prefigures Jesus.

Lamb of god

A title for Jesus. His sacrifice brings freedom from sin and death, like the Passover lamb brought deliverance.

Synoptic Gospels

Matthew, Mark, and Luke. THey present the last supper as a passober meal

Gospel of John

Emphasizes Jesus as the passover lamb and strongly connects his crucifxion to passover imagery

Yom Kippur

Jewish day of atonement, associated with repentance, prayer, and forgiveness

Atonement

Reconciliation or repair of the relationship damaged by sin

Scapegoat

A goat that symbollically carries the peoples sins away. It prefigures Jesus bearing humanity’s sins

Love “charity”

Self-giving love for God and others. Genuine love involves sacrifice

Prophet

A person who communicates God’s message, calls people back to God, challenges injustice, warns against unfaithfulness, and gives hope.

Suffering Servant

A figure in isaiah who serves faithfully, suffers, and helps bring justice or salvation.

Messianic expectation

Many expected the messiah to be like david, powerful, political, and military

How is the Suffering Servant different from common Messianic expectations?

The Suffering Servant is associated with service, suffering, and sacrifice rather than political or military power.

Jesus is the Lamb of God who brings freedom from sin and death.

What is the difference between Isaac and Jesus?

Isaac is ultimately spared; Jesus actually dies and rises.
