Cell
The smallest unit of structure in the bodies of living organisms that performs essential functions for their survival.
Microscope
A device used to enlarge small objects that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
Modern Light Microscope
One of the most important types of microscopes used today in schools and scientific laboratories.
Ocular Lens
A lens with magnification power on a microscope used to view the sample on the slide.
Objective Lens
A lens mounted on a movable solid disk on a microscope, with each lens providing a specific magnification power.
Stage
The platform on a microscope used to place the slide on.
Light Source
The component of a microscope that provides light to view the slide clearly.
Coarse Adjustment Knob
A knob used to move the stage up and down to focus on the sample.
Fine Adjustment Knob
A knob used to clarify the fine details of the sample under a microscope.
Arm
The part of a microscope used to carry it.
Robert Hooke
The scientist who first observed cells under the microscope.
Matthias Schleiden
The scientist who concluded that plants consist of cells.
Theodor Schwann
The scientist who concluded that animals consist of cells.
Rudolf Virchow
The scientist who inferred that cells are produced from other similar cells through cell division.
Cell Theory
The theory stating that the cell is the basic unit of living organisms, all living things consist of one or more cells, and cells arise from existing cells through division.
Plasma Membrane
A thin outer layer surrounding the cell that protects it from external influences and contributes to the exchange of materials with its surroundings.
Cytoplasm
A semi-transparent, gel-like substance composed mostly of water and dissolved materials that fills the cell and contains various internal structures.
Genetic Material
The cellular component that carries hereditary information and controls cell activity.
