Primary Purpose of the Respiratory System

To bring oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide.

External Respiration

Gas exchange between the alveoli and pulmonary blood.

Internal Respiration

Gas exchange between systemic blood and tissues.

Simple Gaseous Diffusion

Movement of gases from an area of higher partial pressure to lower partial pressure.

Right Mainstem Bronchus

The bronchus an aspirated object is most likely to enter because it is wider, shorter, and more vertical than the left bronchus.

Costophrenic Angles

The areas where the diaphragm meets the chest wall.

Blunted Costophrenic Angles

An appearance on a chest x-ray that indicates pleural effusion.

Decrease in Surfactant

Makes the alveoli harder to inflate and more likely to collapse (atelectasis).

Type II Alveolar Cells

Cells that manufacture and produce surfactant.

Functions of the Lymphatic System

Returns excess tissue fluid to the blood, filters lymph, helps fight infection, and transports absorbed fats from the intestines.
