Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa
Two major types of DSM-5 eating disorders involving severe disruptions in eating behavior and a disproportionate influence of weight and shape on self-concept.
Binge Eating Disorder
A new DSM-5 disorder involving disordered eating behavior but potentially fewer cognitive distortions about weight and shape.
Obesity
Considered a symptom of some eating disorders but not a DSM-5 disorder in and of itself; a growing epidemic.
Bulimia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors.
Compensatory Behaviors
Actions taken to counteract the effects of binge eating, such as self-induced vomiting, use of diuretics or laxatives, excessive exercise, or fasting.
Anorexia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by extreme weight loss, an intense fear of weight gain, and a relentless pursuit of thinness.
Binge Eating Disorder
A disorder in DSM-5 characterized by binge eating without associated compensatory behaviors, leading to distress or functional impairment.
Obesity (BMI of 30+)
Not a DSM disorder, but defined as a BMI of 30 or higher
Night Eating Syndrome
A condition where individuals consume 1/3 or more of their daily caloric intake after dinner and/or get up during the night to eat.
