Erector Spinae Group
A muscle group composed of Iliocostalis, Longissimus, and Spinalis that extends the vertebral column.
Transversospinalis Group
A group of deep back muscles including Multifidi, Rotatores, and Semispinalis, involved in rotation and extension of the vertebral column.
Quadratus Lumborum
A muscle that laterally tilts the pelvis and flexes the vertebral column.
Serratus Posterior Superior
Muscle that elevates the ribs during inhalation.
Serratus Posterior Inferior
Muscle that depresses the ribs during exhalation.
Intertransversarii
Muscles that allow lateral flexion of the vertebral column.
Interspinalis
Muscles that extend the vertebral column.
Longissimus
A muscle in the erector spinae group that attaches to transverse processes and plays a role in extension and lateral flexion.
Spinalis
The most medial muscle of the erector spinae group that extends the vertebral column.
Multifidi
Muscles that unilaterally rotate the vertebral column to the opposite side and bilaterally extend the vertebral column.
Rotatores
Small muscles that assist in rotating the vertebral column, spanning one or two vertebrae.
Semispinalis Capitis
A muscle that extends the vertebral column and head.
Action of the vertebral column
Includes flexion, extension, rotation, and lateral flexion.
Origin of Longissimus
Common tendon from the transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae.
Insertion of Serratus Posterior Inferior
Posterior surface of the ninth through twelfth ribs.
Body of C-5
An important landmark in the neck region for muscle palpation.
