Relic boundary
A boundary that is no longer used but is still visible. EX: The Great Wall of China

Antecedent Boundary
Borders that existed before cultural patterns were formed/major settlements and typically based of a physical feature. EX: Nepal and the Himalayas

Superimposed Boundary
Borders drawn by outside forces that do not consider preexisting cultural patterns, this often creates conflict. EX: The Berlin Confrence and Africa

Subsequent Boundary
Boundaries that are drawn after a place has already been settled, these boundaries are changed because something has happened that changed the cultural landscape and it makes more sense to change the boundaries or divide the state (called balkanization). EX: Former Yugoslavia

Consequent Boundary
Boundaries that are made to separate specific ethnic, linguistic, religious, or economic groups from each other. Ex: Partition of India and Pakistan

Geometric Boundary
Boundaries that are drawn using straight lines with no regard for things like physical features. EX: Much of Canada and the USA's border
