Trends
Several happenings taking place around us from which problems arise.
Research
An activity conducted to solve or help solve problems identified from trends in the environment.
Issues
Specific elements existing within problems that must be addressed and transformed into research objectives.
Statement of the Problem (SOP)
The formal transformation of identified issues into the objectives of the research.
Introduction
A section of the study that includes the Background of the Study, Review of Related Literature, Identification of the Problem, and Significance of the Study.
Repetition or extension of investigations
A source of research topics involving studies already conducted or offshoots of studies underway (Angeles, 1966).
Intellectual curiosity
A criterion for a research topic stating it must necessarily arouse interest and questioning.
Modest topic
A criterion for beginners suggesting the research should be manageable and carried out within a limited period of time.
Researcher's interest
A criterion stating the researcher should be interested in and familiar with the chosen topic.
Specific
A criterion for a topic stating it should be clear and not general or ambiguous.
Training and personal qualifications
Criteria for a topic that considers the researcher's background and preparation for the study.
Availability of data
A criterion considering whether the information needed and the methods for gathering them are accessible to the researcher.
Financial capacity
A criterion for a topic that considers the ability of the researcher to fund and support the project.
