Nitrous Oxide
An analgesic gas classified as a blended mixture of 50% O2 and 50% N2O.
Mechanism of Action
A CNS depressant with potent analgesic properties that lasts 2-5 minutes after administration.
Indications for Nitrous Oxide
Acute pain from MSK injury, ACS, renal colic, perinatal, burns, ABD pain, mild to moderate pain procedures, and acute anxiety.
Contraindications
Conditions including inability to comprehend instructions, intoxication, gas trapping conditions, COPD, head injury, and altered mental status.
Self-Administration
Nitrous oxide is administered by the patient themselves.
Side Effects of Nitrous Oxide
Dizziness, lightheadedness, altered mental status, hallucinations, apnea, nausea, and vomiting.
Precautions
Use in a well-ventilated area, monitor oxygen requirements, and be aware of gas separation at low temperatures.
