Public Speaking

An organized, face-to-face, intentional attempt to inform, entertain, or persuade a group of people (usually five or more) through words, physical delivery, and visual or audio aids.

Glossophobia

A severe fear of public speaking.

Enlarge or Projected Conversation

A conceptualization of the process of public speaking and its commonalities with other forms of human communication.

People (Element of Communication)

The senders and receivers involved in communication who exchange roles.

Culture (Floyd, 2017)

The system of learned and shared symbols, language, values, and norms that distinguish one group of people from another.

Message

An element of communication that may be informal and spontaneous (conversation) or formal, intentional, and planned (speech).

Channel

The means through which a message gets from sender to receiver.

Feedback

Verbal and nonverbal responses used to evaluate effectiveness and decide next steps in an interaction.

Noise (Interference)

Contextual, physical, or psychological factors (such as stressors, anxieties, and past experiences) that disrupt communication.

Outcomes

The results of communication, which can be internal, external, short-term, or long-term.

Encoding

Putting thoughts and feelings into words or symbols.

Decoding

Putting words and symbols into personal meaning.

Linear Model of Communication

A transmissional model of communication associated with Weaver and compared to bowling.

Interactive Model of Communication

A model of communication compared to ping-pong.

Transactional Model of Communication

A model of communication compared to Charades.
