Electron microscopy
have much higher resolutions due to high energy electrons
tranmission electron microscopes (TEM)
use a high voltage electron beam to produce an image, and the electrons that pass through the sample are detected
scanning electron microscope
produce an image by probing the surface of a specimen
reflection electron microscope
use an electron beam that is pointed at a thin specimen to detect the scattered electrons that are reflected by the specimen
TEM
utilize electrons instead of light
dense structures absorb a lot of electrons and create a dark spot on the resulting image
image is always black and white
uses magnets to bundle electrons
very thin slice of specimen is needed
