Lysosomes
Single membranous, spherical vesicles containing digestive or hydrolytic enzymes.
Digestive or Hydrolytic Enzymes
Enzymes that breakdown major macromolecules of the cell.
Endocytosis
The cell membrane falls in creating a vacuole or pouch around external contents bringing those contents into the cell.
Autophagy
The process by which unwanted structures within the cell are engulfed and digested within the lysosomes.
Autophagosomes
Lysosomes that digest cell's own organelles.
Autolysis
Programmed cell death in which lysosomes burst and their enzyme contents are dispersed throughout the cytoplasm, disintegrating the cell.
Primary Lysosomes
Newly formed lysosomes, prior to the start of their digestive functions.
Phagosome
A vesicle containing a foreign particle brought into the cell through endocytosis.
