Urban
A word normally used to stand for towns and cities.
Urbanization
The process defined as the growth of small urban settlements into big cities within a country, currently linked to the development of industries and commercial activities.
Megacity
According to the United Nations, a city with a population of 10 million and above.
Central business district (CBD)
An area within a city where most of the economic activities are concentrated.
Urban renewal programme
A programme undertaken by the government to re-develop urban areas.
Smart Cities Mission
An urban renewal programme initiated by the central government of India to create a citizen-friendly environment in about 100 cities.
Smart city
Urban areas in which information and communication technology (ICT) is widely used to improve the quality of life and public utility services.
Satellite city
A smaller city planned and developed near a large/main city to decongest the overpopulated and over-urbanized main city.
ICT
An abbreviation for Information and Communication Technology, referring to digital texts and information systems used for communication.
Slums
Overcrowded, low-income colonies found in urban areas with poor housing and living conditions.
Tokyo
The largest city in the world, which had a population of above 38 million as of the 2015 reports.
Industrial Revolution
An eighteenth-century event that gave pace to large-scale urbanization in Europe by creating employment opportunities in urban centers.
Athens
The capital of Greece and one of the oldest cities in the world, with inhabitants settling there in about 1400 BCE.
Rapid transit system
A transport system, such as an expressway or metro rail, that connects satellite cities to large or main cities.
Noida
A satellite city located in Uttar Pradesh that was developed to decongest Delhi.
Bhubaneswar
One of the cities in India proposed to be developed into a smart city.
Pull Factors
Features like better living conditions, job opportunities, and education facilities that attract people to migrate to cities.
Ministry of Urban Development
The body responsible for the implementation of the Smart Cities Mission in India in collaboration with state governments.
