Mitosis
A process where a cell copies itself to make 2 identical cells
This process is important because it replaces damage/repairs worn out cells
Meiosis
process that contributes to genetic variety (gametes/sperm or egg cells)
Gamete cells only have 23 chromosomes each
Interphase
cell is growing
Replicating DNA
carrying out cell process
Is the first step before meiosis
Homologous Chromosomes
same size
contains same type of genes in the same location
they match together
Crossing over
important process that only happens in the meiosis and alleles are exchanged between homologous chromosomes creating new variations
cell division
cell divides to create new cells (mitosis + meiosis)
Diploid
Nucleus with a full set of chromosomes and homologous (mitosis)
Haploid
Nucleus with half of the normal chromosome number (meiosis)
Zygote
fertilized egg cell, produced when a egg nucleus and sperm nucleus combines (diploid cell)
Sexual Reproduction
two parents combine their DNA to create an offspring (two haploid gametes combines to create one diploid zygote)
Genetic Diversity
many variations and different traits that can be helpful
