Osteoporosis
A chronic disease characterized by significant bone loss, resulting in brittle bones and an increased risk of fractures.
Brittle bones
Bones that are weak and fragile, often associated with osteoporosis, leading to fractures from minimal trauma.
Postmenopausal bone loss
Bone loss that occurs in women after menopause due to decreased estrogen levels, increasing the risk for osteoporosis.
Bone mineral density (BMD)
A key diagnostic marker for osteoporosis indicating the density of minerals (like calcium) in bones, used to assess fracture risk.
Fragility fractures
Fractures that occur from minor trauma, often associated with osteoporosis; can be silent and unnoticed until diagnosed.
Calcium
A vital mineral important for bone health, whose absorption is enhanced by vitamin D.
Vitamin D
A vitamin that helps regulate calcium and is critical for maintaining healthy bones.
Osteopenia
A condition of lower than normal bone density, which may precede osteoporosis.
Etiology of osteoporosis
The causes of osteoporosis, which are multifactorial and include genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors.
Weight-bearing exercise
Physical activity that forces your body to work against gravity, important for building and maintaining bone density.
Gallagher's hump
A colloquial term used to describe the stooped posture that may result from compression fractures in the spine due to osteoporosis.
Hormonal therapy for osteoporosis
Treatment involving estrogen or other hormones to help mitigate bone loss in postmenopausal women.
Fractures, particularly in hips and spine
Common sites of fragility fractures in individuals with osteoporosis.
Screening for osteoporosis
The process of using BMD tests and other assessments to identify individuals at risk for osteoporosis.
Sedentary lifestyle
A lifestyle characterized by little physical activity, which can increase the risk of osteoporosis.
Nutrition for bone health
Dietary measures including adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D, and protein that are essential for maintaining strong bones.
Smoking effects on bone health
Smoking is associated with increased bone loss and a higher risk of fractures.
