Para-professional
An individual who undergoes less than 50-100 hours of training, having a low level of responsibility and a limited range and depth of activity.
Professional
An individual possessing extensive, official knowledge, skills, ethical procedures, and belonging to an active establishment that regulates entry and performance.
Characteristics of the Professional Self
Key attributes of a professional including awareness of self/values, awareness of societal/cultural values, ability to analyze/manage others, ability to act as a role model, altruism, ethical standards/best practices, and awareness of scope.
Awareness of Self and Values
A characteristic of the professional self involving an understanding of who one is, one's work, skills, and personal biases.
Altruism
A characteristic of the professional self focused on liking people and being genuinely motivated to help them.
Barriers to Asking for Help
Eight identified obstacles to seeking help: 1) Is it a problem, 2) Is it serious, 3) Issues with testing & failure, 4) Fear of the unknown, 5) Suspicion of doctors, 6) Inadequate services, 7) Loss of control, and 8) Determining who will be good/helpful/appropriate for the problem.
