A citizen is a person recognized by a country, nation, or self-governing community as a legal member. This status typically confers fundamental rights, such as voting and protection under the law, and also carries responsibilities, like obeying laws and paying taxes. Citizenship can be acquired by birth (jus soli or jus sanguinis) or through naturalization.
