Cellular Respiration
The process by which glucose and oxygen react to produce carbon dioxide, water, heat, and ATP.
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
A molecule used by the body to do work, such as muscle contraction and transporting substances against their gradients.
Byproducts
Substances produced during cellular respiration that are not the primary goal of the reaction.
Homeostasis
The balance maintained by the body's cells, often referred to as a state of disequilibrium.
Influx
The movement of sodium into cells.
Eflux
The movement of potassium out of cells.
Sodium-Potassium Pump (Sodium-Potassium ATPase)
The enzyme that breaks down ATP to pump sodium out of the cell and potassium into the cell, against their electrochemical gradients.
Suffix 'ase'
Suggests the substance is an enzyme.
Active Process
Requires energy in the form of ATP.
