To say what time it is:

Use es la w/ uno and son las w/ other hours

Express time from the hour to half hour example:

Son las dos y diez (it is 2:10) or son las dos y veinte (it is 2;20)

Y cuarto / y quince

It is 15 minutes (quarter) past the hour

Y media / y treinta

It is 30 minutes past the hour

To express time from half hour to hour example:

Use menos to subtract minutes (ex: son las nueve menos diez = it is 9:00 minus 10 ten min, meaning it’s 8:50)
