What is the multi-store model?

The multi-store model attempts to explain the formation of memories, how they are stored and how information travels between the stores.

2
New cards

Multi-store model

Composed of 3 different stores: The sensory store, short-term store, and the long-term store.

  • Short-term memory store for remembering information for around 20-30 seconds while the long-term store has unlimited capacity

  • The more rehearsal of information is done the stronger the memory trace

Peterson and peterson (AIM)

To investigate the duration of short-term memory (as evidence for the Multi-store model)

4
New cards

Peterson and Peterson (PROCEDURE)

  • Participants were given a set of 3 consonants (e.g.KTL) to remember. After they asked to count backwards in 3s to prevent the rehearsal of information and its travel into the long-term memory store.

  • They did this for 0,6,12,18 seconds

5
New cards

Peterson and Peterson (RESULTS)

The results showed that as the delay increased the memory retention of the set of 3 consonants decreased. After 18 seconds of delay there was almost no recollection of the consonants.

Peterson and Peterson (CONCLUSION)

Provides evidence for the claim that our Short-term stores are limited in duration (how long we can remember information short-term) and that transfer of information from the STS to the LTS is needed.
