Ary-Epiglottic Folds
Run parallel from the epiglottis to the arytenoids.
False Vocal Folds
Above the true vocal folds in the space called the supra-glottis/ventricular folds.
What is the ventricle?
The space between the false vocal folds; similar to how the space between the true vocal folds is the glottis.
What does the laryngeal vestibule do?
Squeezes completely during swallowing, causing the muscles to come together and contract the “space.”
What are the levels of airway protection?
Epiglottic inversion
Ary-epiglottic closer that helps with the vestibule squeeze
False vocal fold adduction
True vocal fold adduction
Why would there be aspiration DURING swallowing?
Because 1 of the 4 airway protections is failing.
