Sodium carbonate makes effervescence

Weak acids

  • Carboyxlic acids are weak acids meaning they only partially dissociate in aqueous solution

  • But will react with sodium carbonate or sodium hydrogencarbonate, liberating carbon dioxide

    • Carboxylic Acid + Metal carbonate → Metal salt + CO2 + H2O

  • Metal salt = e.g. Sodium ethanoate

3
New cards

Physical properties

  • -COOH group can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules

  • Making carboxylic acids with up to 4 carbon atoms soluble in water

  • Carboxylic acids can also form hydrogen bonds with each other, they dimerise to form a dimer

  • Have melting points that are much higher than alkenes with a similar Mr, mpt can be used to identify carboxylic acids

4
New cards

Making carboxylic acids

  • By oxidation of a primary alcohol or aldehyde using H+/K2Cr2O7 and heat

  • By acid hydrolysis of nitriles using H+/H2O and heat

5
New cards

Reacting with a metal

Metal + Carboxylic Acid → Metal salt + Hydrogen

6
New cards

Reacting with an alkali

Carboxylic Acid + Alkali → Metal salt + water

7
New cards

Reacting with metal carbonates/hydrogencarbonates

Carboxylic Acid + Metal Hydrogencarbonate → Metal salt + CO2 + H2O

8
New cards

Reacting with alcohols

Carboxylic Acid + Alcohol ⇌ Ester + Water

  • The forwards reaction is esterification which is catalysed by diluted sulfuric acid

  • The backwards reaction is hydrolysis
