DOUBLE THE ROOT! leading tone is never doubled
what do method 1 and method 3 have in common
keep the common tone!!!!!
METHOD 1
keep the common tone between each chord in the same voice. the remaining upper voices move by step in the same direction. OFTEN CONTRARY TO THE BASS!!!
METHOD 2 (no common tone)
All three upper parts move in the same direction, with no leap larger than a 3rd! Motion will go with the bass
METHOD 3
Keep common tone, voice that has the 3rd in the first chord leaps to provide the 3rd in the second chord. remaining voices move by step!!
Root Movement of a 3rd or 6th
Two common tones, both chords will have a doubled root. remaining voices will move by step
Root Movement of a 2nd or a 7th
No common tones between the triad, MOVEMENT MUST BE CONTRARY TO THE BASS!!!
