stored in gallbladder: released into small intestine to help digest fats
why does the liver store glucose in glycogen form?
ensures all organs have a steady supply of fuel, stores it fast
how does the liver detoxify the blood?
makes enzymes that break down toxins like alcohol, nicotine, posions, excess hormones
how does the liver deaminate amino acids?
removes nitrogen, producing ammonia and urea
where does the liver get its blood?
small intestine nutrients aborbed or from oxygenated blood from lungs/heart
what does bile do?
emulsifies: breaks big fats into small fats (allows for more surface area in digestion)
why do we store bile?
eating large portions of fat is helpful but can lead to gallstones from bile salts crystalizing
what is the absorption of nutrients?
gluclose is transported into cells of intestinal walls to move into bloodstream
how are amino acids absorbed?
transported into cells of intestinal wall to move into bloodstream
what happens to glycerol and fatty acids when absorbed?
diffuced in intestinal wall: coated into proteins and moved into lymp vessels then bloodstream
what does the large intestine do?
absorbs water and electrolytes, produces feces, houses bacteria
why does the liver absorb water and electrolytes?
helps make feces (shit) solid. really solidifies that shit. and prevents dehydration
what is the appendix?
stores ‘good bacteria’ and helps us well, shit.
what are some digestive disorders?
ulcers, inflamed bowel disease, hepititis, cirrhosis, galstones
what is ulcers
thick layer of mucous in stomach gets run down- can cause holes in stomach
what is cirrhosis?
scar tissues in liver prevents liver from functioning properly- caused by drinking and hepatitis C
