Antecedent (A)
What happens right before a behavior occurs, signaling the behavior-consequence event.
Behavior (B)
The thoughts or actions that occur following an antecedent.
Consequence (C)
What happens while or right after a behavior occurs.
Contingency
The relationship between Behavior and Consequence, where behavior occurs to get a consequence and a consequence occurs because of behavior.
Reinforcement
A consequence that leads to an increase in behavior.
Punishment
A consequence that leads to a decrease in behavior.
Positive Reinforcement (C+)
A consequence where a desirable stimulus is presented following a behavior, resulting in an increase in that behavior.
Negative Reinforcement (C-)
A consequence where an aversive or unpleasant stimulus is removed when expected behavior is demonstrated, resulting in an increase in that behavior.
Type I Punishment (C+)
A consequence where an aversive aspect is added following a behavior, with the goal of decreasing the behavior in the future.
Type II Punishment (C-)
A consequence where something desirable is taken away when unexpected behavior occurs, with the goal of decreasing the behavior in the future.

Consequences Framework Diagram
A visual overview showing how adding or taking away desirable or aversive stimuli serves to increase or decrease behavior.
The Premack Principle
A reinforcement strategy framed as "First…Then…".
Token Economy
A symbolic reinforcement system where tokens are earned for expected behavior and can be exchanged for items that are positively reinforcing for the student.
Differential Reinforcement
Reinforcing expected behavior to support the extinguishing of an unexpected behavior, as the unexpected behavior is no longer being reinforced.
Non-Contingent Reinforcement
Reinforcing expected behavior at preselected periods of time, ensuring it is no longer received for unexpected behavior.
Extinction
A process that reduces unexpected behavior by removing what was previously reinforcing that behavior.
Overcorrection
A method that reduces unexpected behavior by teaching the skill of taking responsibility and teaching appropriate, expected behavior.
