Darkroom
A scientific laboratory where radiography starts and ends, designed to protect film from white light and ionizing radiation during handling and processing.
Darkroom Disease
A health condition characterized by hypersensitivity to carcinogenic fumes present in the darkroom environment.
Latensification
The increase in film sensitivity that occurs after exposure to white light or ionizing radiation.
Psychrometer
A device used to measure humidity or moisture levels.
Hygrometer
A device used to measure environmental moisture.
Passbox
A film cassette transfer cabinet equipped with an interlocking alarm system that allows film transfer into and out of the darkroom without requiring personnel to enter.
Amber Filter
A brownish safelight filter that filters out Red, Orange, and Yellow colors, used with monochromatic (blue-sensitive) film.
Wratten 6B Filter
A safelight filter that filters light intensity (transmitting wavelengths >550nm) used with monochromatic (blue-sensitive) film.
GBX 2 Filter
A red multi-purpose safelight filter that filters out intensity as well as Yellow and Orange light (transmitting wavelengths >600nm), used for orthochromatic film.
Panchromatic Film
Radiographic film that is sensitive to all wavelengths of the visible light spectrum and must be processed in total darkness without safelight illumination.
Hydrometer
A measuring device used to determine the specific gravity of processing solutions.
Specific Gravity
The relative proportion or measurement of water versus chemical in a processing solution.
Film Sensitometry
The quantitative measurement of the response of x-ray film to exposure and chemical development.
Sensitometer
An optical step-wedge device that produces a constant, simulated, predetermined exposure on film without using an x-ray machine.
Penetrometer
An aluminum step-wedge utilized with an x-ray machine as an alternative exposure source to a sensitometer.
Densitometer
A measurement device that quantifies optical density and the percentage of light transmittance through exposed and processed film.
Phenidone
A rapid reducing agent that serves as the film speed indicator, producing gray shades, building up detail quickly, and controlling the toe of the characteristic curve (Dmin=1.2).
Hydroquinone
A slow reducing agent that serves as the film contrast indicator, producing black tones, building up contrast, and controlling the shoulder of the characteristic curve (Dmax>1.2).
Archival Quality
The permanence of a processed radiographic image over time.
Intensifying Screen
A device containing phosphor materials that converts x-ray energy into visible light to expose radiographic film, reducing required patient radiation dose by 15 to 20 times.
Remnant Radiation
Radiation that passes through the patient without being absorbed and interacts with the image receptor to form the latent image.
Duplitized Film
Radiographic film constructed with an emulsion layer coated on both sides of the base to double film speed and lower patient dose.
Parallax Effect
The apparent image displacement and unsharpness occurring on double-emulsion film caused by crossover light exposing the emulsion layer on the opposite side.
Monochromatic Film
Blue-sensitive film containing globular grains that pairs with Calcium Tungstate screen phosphors.
Orthochromatic Film
Green-sensitive film containing tabular grains that pairs with Rare Earth screen phosphors.
Halation
The halo unsharpness that reduces resolution in single-coated film when light photons pass through the emulsion layer and reflect off the back of the film base.
Reciprocity Law
The principle stating that optical density on a radiograph is proportional only to total energy imparted to the film, valid for direct exposure film but failing for screen-film combinations.
Gurney-Mott Theory
The accepted theory explaining the photographic effect, stating that exposure to x-rays or visible light ionizes silver halide crystals, trapping free electrons at sensitivity specks which then attract positive silver ions.
Sensitivity Speck
A physical imperfection in the silver halide crystal lattice caused by chemical impurities like silver sulfide, acting as the latent image center that traps electrons.
Frankel Defect
A physical lattice imperfection in silver halide crystals consisting of interstitial silver ions and silver ion vacancies.
Latent Image
The invisible, potential image existing on film after exposure to radiation or light but prior to chemical processing.
Manifest Image
The visible radiographic image composed of reduced metallic silver created on the film after exposure and chemical processing.
Microswitch
A mechanical device located at the entrance of an automatic processor that actuates replenishment pumps based on the travel length of the film.
Superadditivity
The synergistic chemical interaction in which the combined activity of two developing agents in solution (such as Phenidone and Hydroquinone) is greater than the sum of their individual activities.
Clearing Agent
The primary chemical component of fixer (such as ammonium thiosulfate or sodium thiosulfate) that dissolves and removes unexposed silver bromide crystals from the film emulsion.
Aperture Diaphragm
The simplest type of beam-restricting device, consisting of a flat sheet of lead containing a central opening.
Grid Ratio
The quotient of the height of the lead strips divided by the width of the radiolucent interspace material (Grid Ratio=Dh).
Grid Frequency
The total number of lead grid strips per unit distance, expressed as lines per centimeter or lines per inch.
Contrast Improvement Factor
The ratio of radiographic image contrast obtained using a grid to the image contrast obtained without a grid, denoted by the symbol k (k=image contrast without gridimage contrast with grid).
Bucky Factor
The ratio of incident remnant radiation to transmitted image-forming radiation through a grid, indicating the required increase in exposure technique and patient dose (B=patient dose without gridpatient dose with grid).
Grid Cutoff
The undesirable absorption of primary image-forming x-rays by lead grid strips resulting from improper grid alignment or positioning.
Air-Gap Technique
An alternative method to radiographic grids that places the image receptor 10cm to 15cm away from the patient, allowing scattered radiation to diverge away from the film.
