Appreciative listening

When you want to be entertained

Comprehensive listening

When you want to obtain information

Critical / deliberate listening

When you want to evaluate the veracity and credibility of a speaker and / or their message

Empathetic listening

When you try to examine a problem from another person’s perspective to help them navigate that situation

Physical noise

Any external distraction that prevents meaning between communicators

Semantic noise

A disconnect between the language of the speaker and the audience because of age, culture, and / or background

Physiological noise

Health-related issues that impede communication. EX: could even be a headache

Psychological noise

If you and / or your audience have different perspectives that influence the meaning of your message. EX: A speech against homeschooling but you were homeschooled
